Creating Conditions to Grow the Good Life
Community Prototypes
We also tested out some small scale options with other community groups to understand what grassroots elements in the community setting can enable families to grow their good lives.
What We Tried
We had observed that the community had a well-connected network of social service organisations (including two Collective Impact groups focused specifically on the 0-4 cohort). We also noticed there were numerous grassroots volunteer groups. There didn't seem to be a lot of overlap between their work and we were curious about what kinds of things we could try to:
- make it easier for families to access resources, experiences and opportunities to connect socially and contribute as community members rather than just as clients.
- bring the work of social services orgs and grassroots groups closer together.
- enable sharing of opportunities and resources between different orgs.
- enable solutions which were lean and could be implemented within existing resources (not requiring an additional dedicated person to oversee them ongoing).

Here are some of the things we tried...
Farm-Direct Produce Box
With the cost of food going up, it's even harder for families to get fresh food on the table. Foodbanks are a welcome lifeline but the fresh produce is often at the end of its life. We wanted to see if we could bypass the supermarket supply chain to bring families fresh, affordable fruit and veg. We partnered with Glavocich Produce farm in Wattleup to create a special $25 Value Fruit + Veg Box for families in financial hardship.
The boxes contain a selection of A-grade seasonal fresh items at almost half of what they cost at Coles. Initially we offered pickup only, but added a home delivery for $5 option following feedback from families that they didn't have transport to collect the boxes.
Family Camping Kit
Through the Sunshine Project, families told us that their number one motivator is to give their kids the good life. But when all their income goes on essentials, they never get the chance to take their kids away for a weekend holiday to make memories together. Families running on empty emotionally aren't well placed to function well, which affects all areas of their lives. We also understand that brokerage is often limited, and prioritised for critical expenses such as food, rent or bills.
We tested out what value could be added in offering a camping kit for loan, along with a voucher for a weekend at a campsite and a fuel voucher if needed.
A Well Earned Date Night
Many couples are also working on their relationship, but when all their income goes on essentials, they can't justify the expense of a date night to recharge their batteries. We tested out what value could be added in offering a movie voucher, along with a voucher for a babysitting service to give the parents a brief respite to build protective factors into their relationship.
