Learning Community (coming soon)

Learning forward together

As we have begun to scale the Sunshine model, we have connected with sector peers in WA and on the East Coast who are also working on embedding aligned relational practice models which aim to overcome limitations in the current helping system.

These organisations have all indicated that they are facing common challenges with embedding relational practice into BAU beyond the design/testing phase. We have identified common friction points (including our own organisational structures and practices) where system structures can hinder families from being able to meet their needs and grow their good life. These include:

  • Front-end practice- undoing internalised mindsets- shifting from transactional, siloed offerings to working with whole family in their context.

  • Organisational backend- how we work with safety and risk, recruitment and performance management when working flexibly in close proximity to families

  • Sector Workforce Capability- upskilling existing staff and informal helpers, next generation of social workers.

  • Cultural security- partnering with Aboriginal and other culturally diverse families in ways that respect cultural parenting practices, family structures, worldviews and working to overcome previous history of institutional betrayal.

  • Negotiating Terms of Funding contracts – FTE to caseload ratios, brokerage/ER, outcome measurement and reporting

  • Interagency co-ordination- reducing duplication of caseworkers for same families. Working more closely with grassroots communities and groups.

  • Commissioning process- challenge-led (mission led) place based

Through initial conversations, several of these organisations have decided to come together with a collective approach to learning forward, to create the necessary shifts within our organisations and also collectively advocate in the wider system for better enabling factors for relational practice.

We are currently seeking resourcing and research partners to be able to progress this work.

If your organisation is embedding relational practice and keen to join the learning community, or if

you can offer financial or other support for the establishment of the Relational Practice Learning Community, please reach out via the Contact Us form.
